8 Digital and SeeLocal teamed up to complete a six mile midnight walk around Banbury, raising money for Katherine House Hospice. Katherine House hospice is based in Adderbury, providing care and assistance to patients with life limiting conditions, and their families. The annual Midnight walk is the biggest fundraising event for the hospice, this year’s aim was to raise £65,000 to fund the running of the day hospice for the next six months.
This year saw a new route for the walk, with both a 6 mile and 10 mile round trip. The theme chosen for the route was ‘superheroes’, we were star struck with Batman doing star jumps to our right, Catwoman doing press ups to our left- there we were in the middle…the Incredibles (of some sort).
Once we had collected our numbers, t-shirts and stocked up on Reese’s Pieces, WonderWoman took to the stage for a short warm up (more like a high intensity workout) before the claxon went and we were off!
Starting from Bannatynes, our first mile was through the streets of Bodicote, with the locals waving and cheering us on through their windows. We then continued down Bankside for the second mile, up the dreaded Hightown Road for the third and down into town. We even had time to stop in at The Swan, who gave us a beer on the house and sent us on our way!
The next stop was St. Mary’s Church where we re-registered and had time to reflect and light a candle. This year was the first year the Church has been used for the walk, and was a really lovely setting to stop and think about why we were raising money for such a brilliant cause, and to catch our breath before tackling the last two miles.
The final stretch was from the church back up to Bannatynes, a total of 2.5 miles. By this time, we were all very hot and tired, but we persevered on and made it back at around 2:15am. We were greeted back by hot bacon sandwiches and cups of tea or coffee- just what was needed! We then collected our medals and collapsed onto the grass before all making our way home.
We raised a total of £600 for the Hospice. The work that Katherine House do is so important for the community, providing security, comfort and reassurance to those in need, and supporting their families through very difficult times.
A huge thank you to all those who have supported us, you’re all superheroes!
